Wee Warrior William

26 February 2025 William 4

William's Mum, Daniella, has expressed her heartfelt thanks for the care and support she and her family received during their stay at Crossbasket House. Along with his Mum, William was rushed from Elgin to Glasgow after going into heart failure. His Grandparents drove the 3 and a half hours down to be with them, but when it came to overnight accommodation, they worried about what would happen. Thankfully, Crossbasket House was there to support them.

William's Hospital Journey

During the last week of January, William was rushed to the children's hospital in Glasgow for immediate surgery, as it was discovered that he was in heart failure.

William 5"From diagnosis, to being airlifted, welcomed to the hospital and prepared for surgery, it was a matter of hours."

The family live over 3 hours away in Elgin, and due to the urgent nature of William's surgery, Daniella and William were airlifted down to Glasgow, whilst his Grandparents drove the 3 and a half hours down to be with them.

Daniella and William were flown down in a  ScotSTAR (Scottish Specialist Transport and Retrieval) plane. This specialist paediatric transport service is a division of the Scottish Ambulance Service, providing life-saving transport and retrieval services for critically ill babies, children, and adults across Scotland.

Operating 24/7, ScotSTAR ensures patients receive expert care while being transported via ambulance, helicopter, or fixed-wing aircraft. Based at Glasgow Airport, the team serves the whole of Scotland, including its islands and remote communities. Glasgow Children's Hospital Charity is proud to support ScotSTAR with funding for vital training equipment that improves patient safety and team readiness.

William 3"There was no time to consider where we would stay, so on the first night my parents and I stayed in a side room next to the ward. The following morning, staff at PICU arranged accommodation for us at Crossbasket House."

Staying at the House

"It is difficult to quantify the feeling of relief when we were offered a room, somewhere quiet and comfortable, allowing us to take stock and prepare for a difficult time ahead. We were able to prepare meals, do some washing and sit around a table to discuss the day.

"Crossbasket House felt like an oasis amongst so much uncertainty."

William 2We are beyond grateful for the support and understanding demonstrated by the staff who answered every question and went out of their way to make things easier for our family."

William is now back to his cheeky self, and is thriving.
